On February 7, 2024, the Center for African American Studies hosted its 12th Annual Conference, “Celebrating 50 Years of Hip Hop.” Big Daddy Kane keynoted the event.
Wrapping up the the CAAS 12th Annual Conference on February 7, 2024, DJ 9th Wonder held a masterclass on the art of DJing.
On June 14, 2023, Mavericks came together in song, dance and reflection for the annual Juneteenth Festival at the University of Texas at Arlington.
On May 10, 2023, the University of Texas at Arlington hosted a celebration of African American culture and achievement to honor this year’s Black graduates.
The Center for African American Studies presented its 11th Annual Conference on February 16, 2023 where Dr. Ruth Simmons, President of Prairie View A&M, discussed institutions and community development.
The Center for African American Studies hosted a free screening of the first episode of Echoes From the Hill on October 18, 2022. The documentary features photos, maps, documents, and excerpts from interviews with Black residents and their descendants who lived in Arlington.
On October 10, 2022, the Center for African American Studies October Power Hour featured Dr. J. Anthony Guillory who discussed Theodicy and Racial Destiny in the Lyrics of Kendrick Lamar.
Dr. Opal Lee, the Grandmother of Juneteenth and nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize, visited UTA on April 13 2022, explaining the significance of the holiday, which commemorates June 19, 1865, when news of the federal order ending slavery in the United States reached enslaved people in Galveston, Texas.
On September 29, 2021, renowned journalist and author Roland S. Martin served as the keynote speaker at the Center for African American Studies’ 10th annual Opening Lecture at The University of Texas at Arlington.
